construction (2005-2006)

Construction of Earthrace commenced in February 2005, and 14 months later she was launched in the Henderson Creek, in Auckland, New Zealand.  A total of 14,000 hours of paid labour, plus many more thousands of volunteer hours went into the build.

Below are a series of video blogs filmed by Ryan Heron that follow the build process.  There are both PC and MAC versions.  Just click on the blog text and the video will load.  Note it sometimes takes a while to load, depending on how many visitors are accessing our website at the time.

Construction went some US$500,000 over budget, due mainly to underestimation of the carbon spars, which required $250,000 of carbon each!

Earthrace has always relied heavily on volunteers, and this was evident throughout the build process. Local schools, environmental groups, students, and highly skilled professionals all generously donated their time to the project.  +more

Similarly, almost all the hardware and equipment in Earthrace was donated or sponsored.  Hundreds of companes from all over the globe contributed to getting Earthrace launched, not to mention the hundreds more who helped get her around the world on tour, and through the first, and finally the second successful record attempt.
